NEW HOPE for GOVI

GOVI is a handsome 1-year old coonhound mix who came to the Huron County Humane Society as an owner surrender in June 2020. He passed our temperament test for anxiety and aggression. We were so happy for Govi.  He was scheduled for a home visit to adopt. However, three short hours later, Govi was returned to the shelter. He was very anxiety-ridden during the home visit and was very destructive the whole time and urinating everywhere.  He had never exhibited these behaviors at the shelter.  Now, at the shelter, his anxiety increased.  He was very agitated and had problems focusing.

Two of our newer staff members, Daphne and Charlie, started working with Govi on leash training and various manners in hopes of alleviating his extreme anxiety that was escalating. Govi’s condition quickly became alarming. Eliminating this extreme anxiety was beyond our knowledge and capabilities. We started contacting trainers to see if anything could be done. All of the trainers concluded that this extreme type of behavior would take at least one year of one on one training to alleviate his issues so he would be adoptable and stated that it would be inhumane to keep Govi at the shelter in his current mental state.

The whole shelter staff immediately focused on Govi as a top priority. After exhaustive research and many calls, our newest staff member Daphne, who had worked at another rescue for 13 years, hit the jackpot! One of her contacts, Peggy Hartman from Hartman’s Hounds, a rescue in Amherst agreed to come and assess Govi and help us find a trainer.  Great news!  Govi will have a second chance at finding his new loving furever home.  In August Govi made his trip from Huron County Humane Society to Trainer, Lisa Stella’s facility, The Doggie Inn in Grafton. Michelle Reichlin from Fido’s Companion Rescue in Avon has funded Govi’s first month of recovery on his long journey to wellness.  In just a few days, Govi is responding well to being with Trainer, Lisa.  He is learning thru play and agility exercises. Thank you to all who helped the puzzle pieces fall in place for Govi. Stay tuned for updates on Govi’s progress. Now, his future looks bright.
